Steep but short 0.3 miles to the first (and best) shady cascades. For a more vigorous hike continue to 1.3 to the upper, more open cascade. We turned around there but the trail continues to climb to 1.7 to a high meadow. Overall this was a very steep, high effort hike that involves “stair master” type climbing along with many rocks and roots to pay close attention to. You return downward the way you came to the parking lot. We did this in early August and had plenty of parking in the upper lot that is closer to the falls. Skip the lower lot to save some climbing.

You can get away with tennis shoes, but do yourself a favor and wear some sturdy hiking boots. Expect a good amount of big steps for the first third of the climb. Beautiful and shaded hike up with very very cool views at the top. Great way to spend a couple hours. Bring $3 for the parking fee envelope.

Second time, but now with my husband and my baby girl (15 months old). Enjoyed the hike so much. We were camping in Sherando recreation area (40 minutes drive) and went for the hike. Before you go up there are restrooms. Well maintained area, so happy I did it again, after almost 4 years from the first time which was in cold winter. Date: June 6, 2023

Nice hike and we went the 1.7 miles only because a thunderstorm was coming in hot.

Very fun and beautiful hike. The trail was a little muddy when I went but overall decently maintained trail.

This place was absolutely beautiful, very peaceful and one of my favorite day trips. Its also about 40 min to Nelson 151 where there is a lot of wineries, distilleries and breweries. Also, beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Leg dayyy…moderately difficult all the way up kind hike but the path is clear and there are lots of stopping points with benches. Parking was $3 and the lower/upper lots are right next to each other. There are bathrooms but they’re pretty smelly.

Hiking Crabtree Falls exceeded our expectations. The 3-4 mile hike (round trip) was beautiful, relatively easy, and ended with a gorgeous view. It’s a great hike for families and for dog walks. The path is very clear. Whatever you do, don’t climb on the rocks and don’t venture off the path. The hike took us about 3 hours as a family including lunch halfway through.
